The Basics of Protective Relays

Protective relays are the "brains" of the power system. Their primary job is to detect faults and isolate them from the rest of the grid.

Why is protection important?

  1. Safety: Protecting personnel from dangerous voltages.
  2. Equipment Life: Preventing damage caused by high fault currents.
  3. Stability: Keeping the rest of the grid running while a fault is cleared.

Common Relay Types

  • Distance Relays (21): Measure impedance to find fault distance.
  • Differential Relays (87): Compare current in and out of a zone.
  • Overcurrent Relays (50/51): Trip when current exceeds a setting.
